The project:

Nikosia University operates a test sewage treatment place that can be used to test new concepts in wastewater treatment. In test mode, raw wastewater must be pumped without blockage.

Performing company:

Nikosia Technical University, Cyprus

Tsurumi partner:

D.I.S. Powerplant Ltd., Nikosia, Cyprus

The problem:

Wastewater in Cyprus often carries blockage solids and other coarse contaminants. Nikosia University operates a test sewage treatment plant in which concepts for the treatment of critical wastewater can be tested and developed. The pumping of this critical wastewater requires the use of pumps with cutting units.

The solution:

Eleven years ago, two Tsurumi 37-CL4 units (model number today: 100C43.7) with cutting units were built into the test system.

These pumps have run for the last eleven years without blockage in raw wastewater, without maintenance

and without any problems at all. In 2012 there was a larger construction project with exten sive earthmoving work on the grounds of Nikosia University, as a result of which large quantities of sand were introduced into the sewage treatment plant. In January of 2013, it was determined that the power of the pumps in the raw wastewater was dropping. It turned out that the wear plate of the cutting unit pumps was worn by the high sand content. Other than that, no damage was detected, and cost-effective repairs were possible.

When it was examined why the pumps had not been mainted for eleven years, this was the reply: "We simply forgot all about those pumps."

In the event of abrasive and corrosive utilization, stronger wear and tear will take place naturally in certain components. With regards to the above application wear and tear can take place mainly in impeller, agitator, suction plate, shaft sleeve, oil ring, mechanical seal, pump casing, strainer, motor casing and discharge coupling. Depending on the working conditions the lifetime of those parts might vary significantly and can be shorter than the legal warranty period.
