Pumping station pulled the plug

Wastewater

Blockages are an increasing challenge in many pumping stations these days: Too many household wipes make the pump technology capitulate.

A municipal operator was annoyed twice. Only two years ago a new pump was installed. Under the load of solid fibres in the municipal sewage, the modern unit clogged. These days, Corona provides a similar picture in many pumping stations. When the maintenance effort increased substantially, the decision was made to replace it. Cleaning several times a week made operation uneconomical.

The pump manufacturer Tsurumi supplied a medium-sized unit of its C series. The wastewater pump, which can be set up vertically or horizontally, offers a special feature: the impeller and suction plate with a tungsten carbide blade form a cutting mechanism that effectively crushes solids in the wastewater. The cutting mechanism literally slices itself through thick fibre plaits. Tungsten carbide, a non-oxide ceramic, is one of the hardest materials of all. After months, the operator reported: blockages and clogging were a thing of the past.

The 100C43.7 type pump has an output of 3.7 kW and rotates at 1450 rpm. It moves 1700 l/min and pumps up to a maximum head of 16 m. A small advice: horizontal installation favours the cutting behaviour because no material is caught on the pump feet. Tsurumi is regarded as a leading manufacturer of construction pumps with an extensive product range. Thanks to large warehouses, the company has so far been spared the delivery problems of the Corona era. The pumps can also be rented.
