Wastewater on Military Base

The Novo Selo Training Area is a major Bulgarian military training facility established in 1962, presently used by other NATO nations as well. The range has a surface area of 144 km2 (55.6 sq. mi) and is situated 45 km from Bezmer Air Base and 70 km from the port of Burgas in Sliven Province, Bulgaria.

The facility has its designated areas and sectors for tank shooting, and nuclear, biological, and chemical defense and reconnaissance training. The Novo Selo Training Area is highly appreciated by NATO experts and troops and has become the favored site of annual joint US and Bulgarian troops exercises since 2004.

The Novo Selo Training Area is among the joint US-Bulgarian military bases established according to the 2006 Defense Cooperation Agreement between the United States and Bulgaria. The US Army started in late 2008 a 61.15 m USD investment in the development of new housing and other infrastructure for the American troops training at Novo Selo Training Area.

The problem

Due to the increased number of persons/soldiers to be trained at Novo Selo, a new complete wastewater treatment facility needed to be established. Tsurumi (Europe) GmbH participated/supported in the layout of the wastewater treatment station and supplied all needed technical equipment (pumps, TRN aerators, Scum skimmers, bar screens etc.).

The solution

Installation of 14 units 32TRN21.5 in the biological activation step of the WWT station. The TRN aerators provide aeration in the activation tanks and run nearly maintenance free.

Installation of a total number of 24 wastewater pumps of several sizes and with various impeller forms. C-series pumps with cutter impeller, B-series pumps with channel impeller and U-series units with vortex impeller are used in different applications of the WWT station.

A Tsurumi KW bar-screen is used in the physical separation step of the WWT plant to eliminate bigger impurifications before the biological step of WWT. The KW fine screen "rakes" out any impurification larger than 2mm in diameter.

In the final clarifier of the WWT station, several Tsurumi FSP scum scimmers are used for scimming off floating foam and (in a modified form) for the clear water discharge of the plant.

During the construction of the WWT plant, additional Tsurumi construction pumps were used to support the built of the WWT station.

In the event of abrasive and corrosive utilization, stronger wear and tear will take place naturally in certain components. With regards to the above application wear and tear can take place mainly in impeller, agitator, suction plate, shaft sleeve, oil ring, mechanical seal, pump casing, strainer, motor casing and discharge coupling. Depending on the working conditions the lifetime of those parts might vary significantly and can be shorter than the legal warranty period.
