Tunnel water recycling

Images

A tunnel in Southern Germany with a length of 4300 meters is planned to be finished and operable by 2028. The biggest challenge for the project had been the need for lowering of the groundwater table in order for the tunnel boring machine to commence its work. The removed water needed to be treated for environmental requirements so it can be released for seepage into the nature.

Development of dewatering concept and special solution for dry installation.

The problem

When groundwater is removed, it contains naturally a lot of abrasive material e.g. sand and gravel. Normally centrifulgal pumps would have been selected for similar applications. However, the abrasive substances would clog and wear the centrifugal pumps often, hence the customer was looking for a low maintenance solution. Furthermore, centrifugal pumps are fairly big in terms of size and the customer was limited in space for pumps.

The solution

KTZ32.2 the flagship of tough drainage pumps had been selected for its great durablilty. Additionally, Tsurumi pumps allow for dry installation which made the installation on site highly flexible.

Specifications KTZ

In the event of abrasive and corrosive utilization, stronger wear and tear will take place naturally in certain components. With regards to the above application wear and tear can take place mainly in impeller, agitator, suction plate, shaft sleeve, oil ring, mechanical seal, pump casing, strainer, motor casing and discharge coupling. Depending on the working conditions the lifetime of those parts might vary significantly and can be shorter than the legal warranty period.
