A major milestone is approaching in one of Berlin's most important water infrastructure projects. Construction of a new 30-metre-deep stormwater overflow basin began in January 2025, and after around 18 months of continuous dewatering, the project is now preparing for its first test flooding.
Throughout the construction phase, groundwater and surface water have been reliably collected in pump sumps and removed using Tsurumi submersible pumps. For this demanding application, our trusted market partner Biergans Pumpen-Vertrieb GmbH selected Tsurumi's robust LH series, which has delivered virtually wear- and maintenance-free operation under challenging site conditions.
As the project progressed and operating conditions changed, the originally installed LH 23.0 was complemented by the even more powerful LH 25.5, ensuring maximum performance and reliability throughout every stage of construction.
With the completion of the basin now in sight, Berlin's impressive Stormwater Overflow Basin No. 4 is almost ready for its test flooding. The drainage process will once again rely on Tsurumi technology, with two GPN622 pumps equipped with protective cages standing by for operation.
From the very beginning, Biergans Pumpen-Vertrieb GmbH has supported this flagship project with premium Made in Japan pump technology and outstanding technical expertise. The upcoming test flooding marks another significant milestone as this major infrastructure project moves towards completion.
Once operational, the underground basin will provide a storage capacity of 16,750 cubic metres—equivalent to approximately four and a half modern Olympic-sized swimming pools. It forms an important part of Berliner Wasserbetriebe's long-term Storage Capacity Programme, designed to strengthen Berlin's stormwater management infrastructure and help protect the city's waterways during heavy rainfall events.

A major infrastructure project is currently taking shape in northwestern Iceland, near the Gufu and Djúpi fjords, where a new 250-meter road bridge is under construction. Once completed, the bridge will significantly improve connectivity in the region by replacing the existing winding and hilly coastal roads that currently follow the fjord shorelines.
The new crossing will not only enhance traffic flow and safety but also shorten travel distances by 22 kilometers and reduce driving times by approximately 30 minutes.
We are proud that our Icelandic market partner, Rúko hf, is contributing to the successful progress of this ambitious project with high-performance Tsurumi pumps. Five KRS1022 units and one KTZ67.5 unit are being used to remove seawater from the construction excavation and discharge it back into the sea.
Designed for the Challenge of Seawater
One of the biggest challenges on coastal construction sites is corrosion caused by saltwater. To ensure reliable long-term operation, the deployed KRS and KTZ pumps have been equipped with Tsurumi's specialized Seawater-Resistant Kit.
The kit combines two key protective measures:
Sacrificial zinc anodes that protect pump components from galvanic corrosion
Seawater-resistant impellers made from special cast iron
How Sacrificial Anodes Protect Pumps
Galvanic corrosion occurs when two or more metallic materials come into electrical contact in a highly conductive environment such as seawater. In such cases, the metal with the lower electrochemical potential corrodes first, while the metal with the higher potential remains protected.
Tsurumi utilizes this principle by attaching zinc sacrificial anodes to the pump housing. Since zinc has a lower electrochemical potential than the gray cast iron used in the pump casing, the zinc corrodes instead of the pump itself.
For optimum protection, the weight of the anodes must correspond to approximately 5% of the pump's dry weight. In the Iceland project, this means 4.95 kg of zinc anodes for the KTZ67.5 and 19.5 kg for each KRS1022.
To provide additional protection where sacrificial anodes alone may not be sufficient, Tsurumi has also developed a seawater-resistant impeller made from a special cast-iron alloy. Together, these technologies deliver outstanding durability and reliability in harsh marine environments.
The Iceland bridge project is another example of how Tsurumi pumping solutions help overcome demanding construction challenges while supporting the development of critical infrastructure around the world.

Many cases of overheating motors or underperforming pumps are not caused by the quality of the motor itself. In fact, the root cause is often found in the electrical power supply.
A common mistake during troubleshooting is measuring the electrical values when the pump is not operating under full load. In such situations, the readings may appear to be within standard limits, while the actual problem only becomes visible during normal operating conditions.
To ensure accurate diagnostics, the following points should always be considered:
1. Measure only while the motor is running
Electrical measurements should always be taken when the motor is in operation to obtain meaningful results.
2. Check for voltage drop
Undersized conductors or excessively long cable runs can cause significant voltage drops under heavy load conditions.
3. Measure all three voltage pairs
Check the U, V and W phase pairs. Standard operating voltage is typically between 380 and 400 volts.
4. Monitor voltage balance
Large voltage differences between phases can lead to increased motor temperatures and premature failure.
5. Isolate and inspect each phase
Disconnect and test each phase individually to identify potential mechanical blockages or load-related deviations.
6. Perform a warm-up test
High starting currents combined with poor electrical connections can quickly reduce system performance and efficiency.
Understanding the relationship between power quality and pump performance is essential for reliable operation and long service life. Proper electrical testing under real load conditions can help prevent unnecessary downtime, reduce maintenance costs, and improve overall system efficiency. Very important: Electrical work must only be performed by qualified electrical personnel.
