In Finland, as a by-product of mining operations, Gypsum is produced and utilized as a soil enhancer and for water conservation. The customer's objective was to maintain a dry environment in this area and effectively manage on-site water removal.
Know moreThe WWT station of Freudenstadt suffered from the problem, that the installed pumps of another maker kept wearing out very fast in the challenging application of a sand trap. Due to the high percentage of sand in the medium to be pumped, normal sewage pumps in grey-cast-iron construction are in terms of material too weak to withstand the abrasion.

This Friday, March 27, Tsurumi invites industry professionals to join a new online training session highlighting one of its most powerful and versatile pump ranges.
The upcoming session will focus on the GSZ series, which has recently been expanded with seven new models. These submersible high-performance wastewater pumps, made of durable cast iron, are specifically designed for applications requiring exceptionally high flow rates. With the introduction of four- and six-pole motors, the new GSZ pumps offer significantly reduced wear, ensuring longer service life and enhanced reliability in demanding environments.
A key technical feature of the GSZ series is its advanced water jacket cooling system, which enables efficient temperature control even when the motor is exposed during operation. Additionally, integrated pressure relief ports protect the shaft seal by preventing discharge pressure from impacting it directly—further contributing to durability and operational safety.
The live training session begins at 11:00 a.m. (CET) and will provide a comprehensive overview of the GSZ series. Participants will gain insights into typical applications, real-world use cases, and the unique features that make these robust slow-speed pumps a reliable solution for challenging wastewater scenarios.
The training is free of charge and will be conducted in English. Interested participants can register via the official webinar link:
https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/6017718511049/WN_KWJ3eJuMT2Cqo7tsPJz9PQ
Looking ahead, Tsurumi will continue its online training series with additional sessions:
April 17: Jacket-cooled sludge pumps of the NKZ series
May 15: Heavy-duty sand pumps of the GSD series
Detailed specifications for the GSZ series are available on the company's website. For inquiries ahead of the session, participants are encouraged to contact the Tsurumi sales team directly via email: sales@tsurumi.eu

Understanding how a pump operates within a system is essential for achieving both efficiency and reliability. Tsurumi highlights the importance of pump performance curves as a key tool for selecting and operating pumps სწორly—helping to avoid excessive wear, vibration, and premature failure.
A pump performance curve shows the relationship between flow rate and head pressure, indicating how a pump performs under different conditions. By identifying the correct operating point—defined by the required flow rate and Total Dynamic Head (TDH)—users can determine whether a pump is suitable for their system. TDH includes both static head (vertical lift) and friction losses within the system.
At the center of efficient operation lies the Best Efficiency Point (BEP), where the pump delivers maximum hydraulic efficiency with minimal energy use. Operating near the BEP ensures balanced internal forces, smooth performance, and reduced mechanical stress. Selecting a pump that runs close to this point under normal conditions is key to maximizing efficiency and extending service life.
Running a pump far outside its BEP can lead to serious issues. Imbalanced forces inside the pump increase stress on components such as bearings, seals, and shafts, potentially causing premature failure. In addition, hydraulic instability may occur, leading to cavitation—where vapor bubbles form and collapse—damaging internal components and accelerating wear.
Efficiency can also decline over time due to wear, deposits, blockages, or insufficient maintenance. These factors can shift the operating point away from the BEP, increasing energy consumption and reducing performance. Regular inspection, cleaning, and maintenance are therefore essential.
To ensure optimal performance, it is recommended to regularly verify the actual operating point using flow and pressure measurements. If necessary, system adjustments—such as modifying resistance or valve settings—can help bring the pump back into its optimal range.
Conclusion: Correct interpretation of pump curves, accurate system design, and continuous monitoring are crucial for maintaining energy-efficient and reliable pump operation.

Energy-efficient pumps and intelligent control solutions from Tsurumi demonstrate how optimized engineering can deliver reliable performance—even in demanding applications—while minimizing energy consumption. The result: lower operating costs, improved reliability, and extended equipment service life.
A key factor in achieving this is operating at the Best Efficiency Point (BEP), where hydraulic efficiency is at its peak. Running pumps outside this range leads to higher energy losses and accelerated component wear. Selecting the right pump for the specific application ensures operation closer to the BEP, improving efficiency and reducing strain on seals, bearings, and motors.
Automation and smart control systems further enhance performance. Tsurumi solutions ensure pumps run only when needed. Technologies such as float switches or electrodes prevent dry running and unnecessary operating time by activating pumps only at defined water levels—significantly reducing energy consumption.
For applications with fluctuating demand, Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) or Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) offer additional efficiency gains. By adjusting motor speed to actual requirements, pumps can operate closer to their optimal range across varying conditions. This not only saves energy but also reduces mechanical stress and wear. Combined with intelligent automation, these systems ensure pumps are used only when required, eliminating energy waste.
Component condition also plays a crucial role. Impeller wear increases hydraulic losses and energy demand. Maintaining proper clearances through routine inspections and timely replacement of worn parts helps sustain optimal performance. While Tsurumi pumps are designed for long service life, regular maintenance remains essential to minimize efficiency losses and long-term costs.
Proper installation is equally important. Pumps must be submerged to the recommended water level to ensure stable operation and effective motor cooling. Insufficient submersion can lead to cavitation, overheating, and increased energy consumption, reducing overall system reliability.
System design also has a direct impact on efficiency. Well-designed piping and valve layouts minimize friction losses and unnecessary energy use. Key measures include reducing pipe length, avoiding sharp bends or sudden diameter changes, and using correctly sized piping.
Conclusion: A combination of correct pump selection, intelligent control, proper installation, optimized system design, and consistent maintenance is essential for maximizing energy efficiency and ensuring reliable long-term operation.
